Upson family correspondence, 1850-1868.

The majority of these letters deal with the Upson family's mining and business interests in California and Montana; life in Sterling, Montana, and Sacramento and San Francisco, California; and the settlement of the estate of Gad Ely Upson after his death in 1866. There is one letter by James Upson written in Panama while on his voyage to California onboard the ship Falcon. There is also one letter written by Hiram D. Upham, Deputy Agent for the Blackfeet Indians. The originals of these letters are in the Upson Family Papers at Yale University Library.

The Upson family is comprised of Lauren Upson, his son Lauren Asahel, and his three brothers James, Charles, and Gad Ely. The family was originally from Connecticut but all but Charles moved west to California and Montana in the 1850s. Charles Upson lived in Michigan and Washington D.C. and was a state senator for Michigan beginning in 1855 and a congressman in 1863. Gad Ely Upson was the Indian Agent at Fort Benton, Montana. Upson was born March 19, 1821 in Connecticut and died in Coldwater (Mich.) on Sept. 5, 1885. He graduated from Yale, moved to Mich. in 1845, and was admitted to the bar in 1847. In 1873 he was 1 of 18 commissioners to revise the state constitution of Michigan. He held various local political and judicial positions.
